Question by renew_me: I need to know the ins and outs of buying a car?
First and foremost, PLEASE only serious responses.
Okay if you check my question history, then you know that I’ve been going through H**, trying to buy a car from the newspaper in the price range of 3,000 bucks. Well I hate getting my hopes up high, because this has happened to me way too many times in this process, but I think I have found the car.
(Sidebar) I wanted a Toyata, Honda, or Nissian, but I couldn’t find any reputable cars in my price range, so when you answer lets just look at the facts.
The car is a white four door Dodge Neon 1999 with 131,000 miles. They’re asking price is 2,800. The dealership is not a franchise, but it’s seems like they just may have the diamond in the rough or the needle in the hay stack that I’ve been looking for.
I’m not going across the country in this car, but I’ll be going about 30 miles out from where I live to go to my second job(if I get it) and to my first job and to school and some other places.
The dealership has been only open for 3 months and it seems like they’re just trying to get their business up and running.
I have set up an appointment to talk to the boss the car. I plan on asking him if we can take the car to my mechanic. I know my mechanic is way to busy at his own business to go with me looking at cars, and I understand that plus he doesn’t charge me to expect the cars that I bring to him.
Since I’ve been on this journey I’ve only had one man to let me take the car to the mechanic most of them for insurances purposes and not wanting the car to be damage have said to me that they don’t mind the mechanic coming to their house, however they don’t feel comfortable with the car going to the mechanic.
I pray that the dealer will not be against my the car going to my mechanic’s shop. However I need to know what I do when I hopefully found out everything is on the up and up.
Basically I need to know how the paperwork should look.
By the way the radio is totally out of the car, but they have another dodge neon on their lot that looks very broke down. They told me they were going to take that radio out and put the other radio in. Now I’m looking for reliablity to here, so I was willing to go without the radio, but I was wondering if that indicated electracal problems down the road. When we took it for a test drive no lights popped on and it ran real well. Thanks to all serious responses in advance.

Bottom line: If ANYONE; a private party or a dealer will not let you take a used car to your mechanic for inspection, they are scamming you. Period. If they are being honest, then they should have no problem with that. The “insurance” nonsense is just that. You can test drive it, but if you stop at your mechanic, it voids it somehow? No.
But, on the flip side, keep in mind that for $ 3k, you aren’t going to get a gem mint car, either. Although $ 2,800 does sound pretty steep for an 8 year old Neon. For what you are looking for, I would stay away from dealerships and look on Ebay or in the local newspaper..Good luck!
